Cinema is not always entertainment

Last weekend I had the opportunity to go to the cinema with a group of new friends. The movie with a rather misleading title ‘Corpus Christi’ is a Polish candidate for an Oscar award and here I will relate some of my impressions about it. 20-year-old Daniel is conditionally released from Juvenal Detention Center and sent to work in a woodshed on the outskirts of Poland. Instead, he goes to a nearby village, pretending to be a priest. When a local old priest gets sick and has to leave the village to cure his alcoholism, Daniel agrees to replace him. He puts on a stolen cassock and pretends to be ‘Father Tomasz’ (the name was the one of the Juvie’s chaplain who had inspired Daniel). The boy is not prepared for a new role, but he has an exceptional sensitivity to human suffering. He finds out about a tragic event that took place in the village and remains alive in the minds of residents. He is looking for a way of reconciliation between the wife of the so-named killer and the f...

Is Polish hospitality a stereotype?

Please do not accuse me of a lack of objectivity. I write rather subjective texts, therefore, you can imagine my title question is already an answer... This weekend I went to my hometown to celebrate my aunt's 50th birthday with my relatives. As I do it always observing the Polish traditions of experiencing certain meetings, holidays, anniversaries or birthdays, also this time I come to the conclusion that we are indeed very generous and hospitable society. But just take a look, in most cases, we are very involved in preparing what requires work from us, but makes our loved ones happy.   We feel proud when we show our family a nicely set table full of dishes. We like to surprise with creativity or small cute detail. We are happy when nothing is missing and each guest fi...

Departures, returns and removals

I use to be an organized, responsible and consistent person, but sometimes I like to make spontaneous decisions and risk as well. I believe that everyone needs a little craziness in his or her life. That is why on 2nd October I woke up at 6 am and went with my luggage towards Benalmadena train station. Since then, everything has gone quite quickly and a bit nervous: train, plane, flight from Malaga to Berlin, bus from Berlin to Szczecin (my hometown), car, luggage change, train from Szczecin to Poznan... Finally, around midnight I got to the unknown city, pulled my bike out of the train, put my trekking backpack and with the priceless help of Google Maps app I reached my new apartment in Poznan, which I had never seen before, to start classes the very next day at 8 am. Now I can proudly call myself a student at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan and a new resident of the city. But let's get back to the point of departure. What was I doing in Benalmad...
